What to Wear

Every celebration has its own colours. Here are the shades, the mood and a few ideas for each day.

4 December, morning

Haldi

Shades of Yellow

Come dressed in sunshine: mustard, marigold, saffron, lemon and every warm yellow in between.

  • Lemon
  • Marigold
  • Mustard
  • Saffron
  • Amber
For her
A cotton or chanderi suit, a light saree or a lehenga in any yellow. Flowers in your hair would be lovely.
For him
A yellow or mustard kurta with white or beige pyjamas. Linen is perfect for the morning sun.
Good to know
Turmeric stains, so keep your silks and family jewellery for the evening.

4 December, afternoon

Mehndi

Shades of Green

Any green you love: sage, olive, mint, pista, emerald and everything in between.

  • Mint
  • Pista
  • Sage
  • Olive
  • Emerald
For her
Sharara sets, printed sarees or anarkalis. Short sleeves make it easier to get your henna done.
For him
A green or olive kurta, a bandi over white, or a printed shirt if you prefer.
Good to know
Wear something you can comfortably sit on the floor in. Henna takes a while to dry.

4 December, evening

Sangeet

Bling and Glam

Sequins, shimmer and metallics. Bring out your sparkliest party look.

  • Champagne
  • Gold
  • Rose gold
  • Silver
  • Gunmetal
For her
Sequinned sarees, embellished lehengas, gowns or a shimmery jumpsuit. And shoes you can dance in.
For him
A sherwani or bandhgala with metallic threadwork, a velvet jacket, or a sharp dark suit.
Good to know
There is no such thing as too much tonight.

5 December

Wedding

Anything but Red

Your favourite festive colours, in any shade except red. Red is for the bride alone.

  • Ivory
  • Peacock
  • Indigo
  • Plum
  • Forest
For her
Banarasi and kanjeevaram sarees, lehengas, anarkalis, in jewel tones, pastels or ivory with gold.
For him
Sherwanis, bandhgalas, silk kurtas with a shawl, or a formal suit.
Good to know
Please skip red, maroon and scarlet. The evening is long and outdoors, so do bring a shawl or a jacket.

There is no colour theme on 2, 3 and 6 December, so wear whichever festive Indian outfit you love. Every evening is on an open lawn, so do bring a shawl or jacket to go over it.
